I was frustrated … he’d missed the deadline
Do you ever get disappointed or frustrated by the people in your life?
And
Would you like to improve your personal & professional relationships? If the answer is ‘yes’ ✅ , learning how to create ‘agreements’ with people rather than ‘expecting’ them to do things will help ?
In his brilliant podcast ‘Expectations Vs Agreements’ world renowned business coach & consultant Steve Chandler describes how ‘expectations’ only lead to 2 outcomes:
– disappointment (people don’t live up to our expectations of them)
– neutral / so what! (people live up to our expectation of them)
Notice how the word ‘expectation’ feels. When someone says ‘I expect you to meet that deadline’; ‘I expect you to be on time’; ‘I expect you to have tidied up’ ?
We don’t like expectations
When we don’t have expectations of others, it can only lead to surprise. That’s why you hear people say ‘what an unexpected surprise’ ?
If you don’t like a situation, or something is not happening in your personal / work relationships, Steve encourages you to get an ‘agreement’
When I stopped ‘expecting’ eg someone to text back, to meet a deadline etc & I started using agreements, life got easier
Give it a go. & I’d love to know how you get on …
